Prenatal Back Pain
It is very common to experience lower back pain during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, which can be caused by several potential contributing factors.
The expanding uterus and the contents can weigh over 20 times its non-pregnant weight, and this additional weight being carried means more work for your muscles and increased stress on your joints, which is why your back may feel worse at the end of the day.
Expansion of the uterus causes a forward shift in the centre of gravity and an increased pelvic tilt, which can place additional strain on the muscles of the lower back.
The muscles around the abdomen are stretched and weakened, to accommodate the growing uterus, and can also develop potential separation (diastasis recti), reducing abdominal and spinal support.
An increase in the hormone ‘Relaxin’ loosens the joints and relaxes the ligaments that attach your pelvic bones to your spine, which can make you feel less stable and cause pain when you walk, stand, sit for long periods.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy
is a beautiful and transformative time, but it can also bring physical discomfort and be psychologically challenging.
There is a dramatic increase in oestrogen and progesterone, along with Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG), relaxin, prolactin, and others. With these surges of hormones, it is not uncommon to feel worried, anxious and stressed.
Massage can be very beneficial during this time, as it encourages the body to produce higher levels of your 'happy hormones', dopamine, serotonin and endorphins, making you feel more at ease, calm and relaxed.
Massage can also increase oxytocin levels, released in response to pleasant experiences, including touch, which can manifest in overall feel-good positivity.
It can also reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which is beneficial for both you and your baby.
Additionally, feeling rested and relaxed, happy and de-stressed can also help to improve your quality of sleep.
